HotDocs Corporation Announces Ground-Breaking Cloud Technology for Lawyers

Industry leader in document automation introduces new Software-as-a-Service application, which promises to level the playing field for law firms of all sizes by dramatically lowering the cost of browser-based document generation and streamlining the process for gathering client data.

Lindon, Utah and Edinburgh, Scotland – January 30, 2012 – HotDocs Corporation today announced a new Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) application that will dramatically affect the way law firms of all sizes do business. Coined HotDocs Document Services, the new technology paves the way for thousands of law firms already using HotDocs to transition from the desktop to the internet for document production. Headlining the list of features of HotDocs Document Services is automated client interviews, which enables law firms to email interactive HotDocs interviews directly to clients or to post client interviews on the firm’s web site.

“Until now, small law offices have been at a technological disadvantage,” commented Leonard DuCharme, Chief Strategy Officer at HotDocs Corporation. “HotDocs Server, which up until now has been necessary for web-based deployment of HotDocs templates, is simply outside small-firm budgets. HotDocs Document Services, in contrast, requires virtually no up-front costs and is priced so that even the smallest law offices can take advantage of its powerful features.”

In addition to making cloud-based document generation available on a mass scale, HotDocs Document Services addresses one of the most costly areas of client interaction: data gathering. “Most firms have a lawyer interview each client, asking all relevant questions for the matter at hand, and then someone transcribes the answers into a desktop-based HotDocs interview,” said DuCharme. “HotDocs Document Services enables a law firm to let the client enter the data on his or her own time, using his or her own computer. Once the client is done answering the questions, he or she submits the answers. The law firm can then generate multiple related documents from the answer set. From the law firm’s perspective, the entire process—from client engagement to finished documents—takes just a few minutes. It’s incredibly powerful.”

Pricing on HotDocs Document Services, which will be unveiled at New York LegalTech on January 30, 2012, will average less than $20 per user per month.

HotDocs Software Continues to Dominate in International Business Markets

Company’s software placed in the top nine most relevant business technologies in the UK by Innovation Launch Pad initiative.

Lindon, UT and Edinburgh, Scotland (PRWEB) July 25, 2011

HotDocs Corporation, the global leader in automated document generation, today announced that its HotDocs software was one of just nine business technologies selected from a group of more than 350 for presentation to the nation’s top ranking civil servants and business leaders. All presentations were made on July 19th in Whitehall, London followed by a reception in Downing Street. With the goal of lowering costs by up to 40%, the UK government initiated the Innovation Launch Pad program, which is designed to ferret out the best-of-the-best business technologies for use across government agencies.

Innovation Launch Pad is an excellent example of the UK government working with innovative businesses to improve its processes,” commented Russell Shepherd, HotDocs Corporation’s UK-based CEO. “We’re honored to have been selected to formerly present our company and technology to this elite group of leaders, but we’re not surprised. HotDocs has been a dominant force in the document automation market for almost two decades. In government agencies that repetitively produce legal documentation, HotDocs offers a dramatic increase in production time and quality of documentation over other methods.”

The HotDocs software suite includes a development engine (designed to allow businesses and government agencies alike to transform standard word processing documents and graphical forms into powerful software programs called templates) and various end-user technologies, including HotDocs Server, the company’s solution for cloud-based deployment of HotDocs templates. “In many instances,” commented Shepherd, “HotDocs allows businesses to reduce the time spent generating a document from days or weeks, down to hours, or even minutes. HotDocs is a silver-bullet technology that will dramatically improve almost any business or agency’s productivity.”

Nigel Richards, the company’s International Technical Director, added that “HotDocs Corporation’s consulting staff is well equipped to help UK government agencies integrate HotDocs into existing departmental workflows. We’re looking forward to the opportunity to help the government slash costs while improving the quality of its output.”

New HotDocs 10.1 Facilitates Cloud Development and Third-Party Integrations

Latest software release enhances Web Services API and adds APIs for browser-based-interview customization and file-dependency tracking

Lindon, UT and Edinburgh, Scotland July 12, 2011
HotDocs Corporation, the global leader in automated document generation technology, today announced the release of HotDocs 10.1, the latest version of its award-winning software suite. Among its many enhancements is a substantially improved web services API, a key advancement that facilitates HotDocs-based, private-cloud development as well as integrations into vertical SaaS applications. Also included in the release are significant enhancements to other APIs, one to allow third-party customization of interviews generated by HotDocs Server and one for tracking all files that a HotDocs template depends on. These enhanced APIs offer substantially more flexibility to third-party system integrators.

“In the past, accessing HotDocs Server via the Web Services API required a sometimes-lengthy sequence of programming calls,” commented Lowell Stewart, the company’s Head of Software Development. “In 10.1, an engineer can accomplish with a single call what once took several calls. Aside from obvious time savings, this enhancement makes server load balancing dramatically easier, which appeals to virtually all of our large customers.”

In addition to web services functionality, HotDocs 10.1 includes an enhanced programmer interface that facilitates modification of HotDocs Server interviews. “In previous versions,” explained Stewart, “customers who weren’t happy with the standard HotDocs toolbar (visible in all interviews generated by HotDocs Server) had limited options for customizing it. Some resorted to custom modifications that ultimately made adopting new versions of HotDocs a challenge. The enhanced 10.1 API allows customers to modify the toolbar with much more flexibility and without worrying about forward compatibility.”

Another significant improvement in 10.1 is the Dependency API, which allows developers to know which files a particular HotDocs template depends on. For example, a template file might depend on one or more component files, other inserted template files, graphic files, etc. “If any of these collateral files is missing, a template wouldn’t work properly,” points out Stewart. “And there are many circumstances under which a third-party developer may want to track dependency, the most obvious being in regard to document management systems.” Stewart added that “the Dependency API allows third-party developers to do the type of system integration work that could previously be performed only by HotDocs Corporation’s own engineering staff.”

An upgrade to version 10.1 is free to existing HotDocs 10 users and is available at http://hotdocs.com/Downloads-Updates.aspx.

HotDocs to Unveil HotDocs Server 10 to US Legal Market at LegalTech New York 2011

Product represents a giant leap forward for server-based document assembly.

Lindon, Utah and Edinburgh, Scotland — January 25, 2011 HotDocs Corporation, the market leader in document automation and assembly technology, today announced that HotDocs Server 10, the latest release of its flagship technology, will be unveiled to the US legal market at LegalTech New York 2011 on January 31st – Feb 2nd at the Hilton New York hotel. HotDocs Server 10, which allows for the deployment of HotDocs templates over the Internet, is now Microsoft Silverlight enabled.

“The Silverlight integration is a dramatic improvement for three reasons,” explained Lowell Stewart, the Director of Software Development for HotDocs Corporation. “First, interviews for server-based HotDocs templates can now be accessed using Internet Explorer® and Firefox® on Windows® and Safari® and Firefox on Mac OS®. In the past, Server interviews were limited to Internet Explorer. Second, the new interviews have an updated look and feel, a fact which users should notice immediately. And third, and this one is the real game changer,” pointed out Stewart, “the new interviews run several times faster—often, ten to twenty times faster—than JavaScript-based interviews.”

Stewart’s enthusiasm for the HotDocs Server upgrade was echoed by Leonard DuCharme, the company’s Marketing VP: “Many of our global customers use HotDocs to generate enormously complex documents, sophisticated loan agreements, legal contracts, and other documents which can run to hundreds of pages with thousands of variables. For the generation of such documents,” explained DuCharme, “the JavaScript-based interviews were functional but slow. Silverlight dramatically accelerates the interview process, which improves productivity and ultimately saves money.”

HotDocs Server 10, which was originally released in June 2010, comes bundled with HotDocs Workspace and HotDocs Workspace for SharePoint, both of which are web applications that allow for the organizing and accessing of HotDocs templates and answer files over the Internet.

HotDocs to Return to LegalTech New York 2011

For the first time in more than a decade, company will staff its own booth.

Lindon, UT and Edinburgh, Scotland — January 24, 2011 HotDocs Corporation, the market leader in document automation and assembly technology, today announced that it will be exhibiting at LegalTech New York 2011, the largest legal technology event of the year, from January 31st to February 2nd. HotDocs representatives will be available throughout the show in Booth #316 to meet with attendees and demonstrate the company’s latest software products, including HotDocs Workspace for SharePoint.

“HotDocs has long been the document assembly standard in the legal industry,” commented Leonard DuCharme, Marketing VP at HotDocs, “and we established our brand, in part, at LegalTech New York, where we were a fixture during our formative years.” During the twelve years of LexisNexis ownership of HotDocs, the software company attended LegalTech only as a component of the LexisNexis pavilion. “Now that we are once more under private ownership,” added DuCharme, “we are excited to once again make our presence known at the legal industry’s marquee trade event.”

HotDocs is a software suite that significantly reduces time spent generating custom documents, such as contracts, sales proposals, government and court forms, and legal documents. With HotDocs, users can transform any word processor file or PDF form into an interactive, rule-based template. HotDocs templates produce custom, transaction-ready documents from a question-and-answer interview.

LegalTech New York 2011 will be located at the Hilton New York hotel in New York, NY. To register for the show, visit www.legaltechshow.com.

HotDocs to Unveil New SharePoint Web Part at DevConnections in Las Vegas

New product facilitates rapid document assembly within a SharePoint® site

Lindon, UT and Edinburgh, Scotland — November 1, 2010 — HotDocs Corporation, the market leader in document automation and assembly technology, today announced that its latest product, HotDocs Workspace for SharePoint, is set to be unveiled on November 2, 2010 at DevConnections in Las Vegas. HotDocs Workspace for SharePoint is a web part that works in conjunction with HotDocs Server 10 to enable the assembly of HotDocs templates within a Microsoft® SharePoint® site.

HotDocs templates are built in a word processor using HotDocs Developer 10, the most powerful, flexible document automation tool on the market. Templates can then be published to the desktop or web. To assemble custom documents on the web, users need HotDocs Server 10 and a web application for organizing and accessing HotDocs templates and answer files. HotDocs Workspace for SharePoint is such a web application, enabling sophisticated document production and management within SharePoint sites. With HotDocs Workspace for SharePoint, users select from a list of templates to launch a question-and-answer interview. HotDocs Server 10 then uses the completed answers to generate a finished document, which can be saved to SharePoint or downloaded as a word processor file or PDF.

“SharePoint has an ever-increasing market share in the collaboration software market,” commented Leonard DuCharme, Marketing VP for HotDocs Corporation, “and HotDocs adds tremendous value to the SharePoint experience. With HotDocs Workspace for SharePoint, users can access the power of HotDocs to assemble custom, complex documents while also taking advantage of SharePoint’s built-in features and workflow capabilities.”

HotDocs Workspace for SharePoint is a source code product, meaning users can modify the source code to fit specific business requirements. HotDocs Workspace for SharePoint will be bundled with purchase of HotDocs Server 10 and can run on Microsoft SharePoint 2007 or 2010.

HotDocs Announces Change to Web-Based Product Lineup

Company bundles web applications with HotDocs Server 10 to simplify the sales process.

Lindon, UT and Edinburgh, Scotland – October 26, 2010 HotDocs Corporation, the market leader in document automation and assembly technology, today announced a change in its server-based product lineup. HotDocs Server 10, which enables web-based deployment of HotDocs templates, will no longer be sold separately, but will now be bundled with three pre-built web applications.

In order to generate custom documents on the web, HotDocs Server 10 must be deployed with a web application, commonly referred to as a “host.” A host acts as an interface for accessing and organizing HotDocs templates. “In the past, HotDocs Server customers had several options: build a custom host to meet the exact specifications for their enterprise, or choose one of the three off-the-shelf hosts, which were sold separately,” commented Leonard DuCharme, Marketing VP at HotDocs Corporation. “The decision to bundle the hosts with HotDocs Server 10 is an effort to simplify the sales process, both for us and for customers.”

The three hosts are HotDocs Template Portal, HotDocs Workspace, and HotDocs Workspace for SharePoint. HotDocs Template Portal is a simple menuing system and is mainly designed to transition desktop users to the web, since it functions much like the desktop application HotDocs User 10. HotDocs Workspace (previously named Flexible Document Platform) takes a transaction-oriented approach using “work items” to manage HotDocs users, groups, and content (work items contain one or more assembled documents and the answers used to produce those documents). HotDocs Workspace for SharePoint enables the assembly of templates within a SharePoint® site while integrating with many of SharePoint’s built-in features.

The new HotDocs Workspace for SharePoint will be released in November 2010.

HotDocs Donates in Excess of $2 Million Worth of Software to Nonprofit Legal Organizations

Hundreds of charitable institutions, including Pro Bono Net, have received free HotDocs licenses through the company's donation program.

Lindon, UT and New York, NY – October 5, 2010 HotDocs Corporation today announced that it has donated more than $2 million worth of software to 159 nonprofit legal services organizations through its Charitable Organization Program.

At a time of shrinking budgets and growing demand for help, legal aid and pro bono programs throughout the country are struggling to find ways to do more with less. The donation program, which provides free NFR licenses of HotDocs Developer 10 and HotDocs User 10, enables legal aid and pro bono programs to create automated templates that can be used to quickly and easily assemble legal documents, or to provide tools for self-representation to people their lawyers cannot represent. Nonprofit organizations funded by the federal Legal Services Corporation and state Interest on Lawyer Trust Accounts (IOLTA) programs were eligible to participate.

"We are delighted to be able to assist these programs in their work," said Russell Shepherd, CEO of HotDocs Corporation. "They make a tremendous contribution to the community, and we feel privileged to be able to help."

The Charitable Organization Program is part of HotDocs’ broader support of access to justice initiatives, including LawHelp Interactive, a national initiative that uses donated HotDocs Server software to provide free, online tools that help low-income people and their advocates fill out legal forms. This year tens of thousands of low-income litigants struggling with eviction, foreclosure, domestic violence, child custody, and other critical issues will use LawHelp Interactive to help address these problems. Also benefitting are the courts, which run more smoothly and efficiently when they receive forms that are correctly and completely filled out.

LawHelp Interactive is a program of Pro Bono Net, a leader in innovative programs that increase access to justice. The College of Law Practice Management awarded Pro Bono Net its 2010 InnovAction Award, which recognizes outstanding innovation in the delivery of legal services, for LawHelp Interactive.

"At a time when the divide between rich and poor is growing in America, HotDocs Corporation’s generosity makes it possible to help overstretched legal aid and pro bono organizations bridge the gap for people in need," said Mark O’Brien, Executive Director of Pro Bono Net. "This is a terrific example of how public-private partnerships can benefit all parts of the justice system: the courts, legal aid providers, and poor litigants alike." In addition to HotDocs, LawHelp Interactive has received support from the Legal Services Corporation and the State Justice Institute.

Eligible legal aid and pro bono programs that did not meet the deadline for the donation program can still buy HotDocs licenses at a significant discount, and will receive free installation support.

Bond Pearce Chooses HotDocs for Document Automation Needs

Top-100 UK law firm to replace Word macro-based templates with market-leading HotDocs suite

Lindon, Utah and Edinburgh, Scotland – September 28, 2010 – HotDocs Corporation, the global leader in document automation technology, today announced that Bond Pearce, a top-100 UK law firm, has adopted HotDocs for its document automation needs. The firm, nationally recognized as a leader in energy, retail, real estate, and insurance law, had previously been using Microsoft Word macros for the automated generation of custom legal documentation.

Bond Pearce implemented HotDocs to facilitate the replacement of its outdated Microsoft Word templates for standard correspondence. Andrew Honey, IT Development Manager, states, "There were two key factors in the selection of the product. The first was the lack of dependence on experienced development staff to develop templates, and the second, its scope for wider use as a component of business process and case management solutions provided by the flexible command line structure and API."

"Bond Pearce is one of the largest and most respected firms in the UK," noted Gary Eunson, Commercial Director for HotDocs, "and we’re delighted to have them as a customer. HotDocs will enable the firm’s lawyers to draft and assemble legal documents with much greater efficiency and consistency than their previous process allowed. Given the complexity of the firm’s legal documentation across a range of practice areas, HotDocs is the right solution."

HotDocs is being deployed across some 350 desktops among the firms several UK locations, including Aberdeen and London.

HotDocs Exceeds $1 Million in Software Donations to Non-Profit Legal Services Organizations

Dozens of charitable institutions have received free HotDocs licenses in the new program’s first month

Lindon, UT and Edinburgh, Scotland — July 28, 2010 — HotDocs Corporation today announced that it has donated over one million USD in software since the inception of its Charitable Organization Program in June 2010. The new program provides free NFR licenses of HotDocs Developer 10 and HotDocs User 10 to legal services organizations providing legal assistance to low-income Americans.

The program began in 2008 as the HotDocs Software Donation Program under LexisNexis, the previous owner of the HotDocs business. After the acquisition of HotDocs in late 2009 by Capsoft UK, the largest distributor of HotDocs outside of the U.S., the old LexisNexis donation program was dissolved. In early June 2010, HotDocs Corporation introduced the new HotDocs Charitable Organization Program. Those eligible for the program include organizations funded by the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) or IOLTA (Interest on Legal Trust Account), as well as other equivalent charitable organizations.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute to our community and are privileged to work with such dedicated organizations,” said Russell Shepherd, CEO of HotDocs Corporation. “We believe this new program will assist non-profit organizations as they provide legal aid to those in need.”

“HotDocs software, which dramatically reduces the time it takes to prepare custom legal documents, enables our non-profit legal aid organizations to provide quality legal documentation to applicants on a much broader scale,” commented Glenn Rawdon, who heads the Technology Initiative Grants (TIG) program at LSC. “We’re delighted that HotDocs Corporation is continuing to support the important service our grantees and others like them provide.”

Recipients of the previous LexisNexis program as well as other eligible organizations developing document automation templates in conjunction with Pro Bono Net's LawHelp Interactive program will be eligible for free copies of HotDocs Developer 10 and HotDocs User 10 along with 30 days of free Installation Support until August 31, 2010. Following the August 31 deadline, any new organization that meets eligibility for the Charitable Organization Program will be able to buy licenses at a 70% discount and receive 30 days of free Installation Support.

Latest HotDocs Release a Giant Step Forward for Server-Based Document Assembly

HotDocs version 10 supports Silverlight™ interviews and Microsoft® Office 2010

Lindon, Utah and Edinburgh, Scotland – June 9, 2010 – HotDocs Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of HotDocs Ltd, today announced the release of the HotDocs 10 suite, the latest version of its award-winning document automation and assembly software. In addition to many minor improvements, HotDocs Developer 10, the company’s flagship document and form automation software, and HotDocs User 10, a new desktop-based, runtime software application, now support the upcoming release of Microsoft Office 2010. The most significant changes to the suite involve HotDocs Server 10, the company’s technology for deploying HotDocs templates via the Internet. With the version 10 release, HotDocs Server is now Microsoft Silverlight enabled.

The HotDocs 10 suite also includes realigned feature sets and name changes to several of its products.

HotDocs Corporation and Affinity Consulting Team Up to Target Server-Based Document Automation Market

Affinity awarded Platinum Partner status

Lindon, UT — June 8, 2010 — HotDocs Corporation, the global leader in document and form automation technology, today announced that it has awarded Affinity Consulting Platinum Partner status. The Platinum distinction, which HotDocs reserves for only the most capable and established technology integrators, empowers Affinity to sell, integrate, and support HotDocs Server as well as all other HotDocs products throughout the United States and Canada.

HotDocs Corporation instituted the Platinum Partner program in 2009 specifically to leverage HotDocs Server, a technology that allows enterprise-wide deployment of HotDocs templates over the Internet.

“HotDocs Server is big-system software that catalyzes document production in some of the largest enterprises in the world,” commented Leonard DuCharme, Marketing VP for HotDocs Corporation. “Integrating HotDocs Server into such environments requires more than just engineering expertise; it requires extensive knowledge of automated workflows and disparate technology classes. That’s why Platinum status is reserved for a select few. We have long considered Affinity an elite HotDocs developer and recognize them as having the combination of skills, expertise, resources, and vision necessary to thrive in the large-enterprise server environment. We’re excited to have Affinity as a Platinum partner.”

“Up until recently, HotDocs Server was the domain of HotDocs Corporation’s inside sales and consulting team,” noted Barron K. Henley, Esq., founding Partner of Affinity. “When HotDocs announced its Platinum Partner program late last year, we were immediately interested. The HotDocs suite is easily the most powerful, flexible document automation platform available. HotDocs Server is the key to deploying HotDocs libraries on an enterprise-wide scale. Our Platinum Partner distinction allows us to push HotDocs into previously restricted venues and to integrate with our clients’ existing workflows at a much deeper level.”

HotDocs Corporation and the founders of Affinity Consulting have an affiliation that dates back almost two decades.

HotDocs Corporation Announces Shake-Up in Product Offering

Company realigns feature sets, changes the names of several of its products, and launches a new product in an effort to streamline operations and to better suit the needs of its global customer base

Lindon, Utah and Edinburgh, Scotland – June 4, 2010HotDocs Corporation today announced that its product lineup has undergone significant changes, which will be implemented beginning with the summer 2010 release of the HotDocs 10 suite. The company’s flagship product, HotDocs Professional, a text-based, document-automation toolset, has been renamed HotDocs Developer. PDF Advantage, a program that provides graphical-forms automation functionality to HotDocs Professional, will no longer be sold separately. Rather, PDF Advantage has become a feature set within the new HotDocs Developer. HotDocs Standard, a scaled-back automation tool for small enterprises, has been renamed HotDocs Developer LE (Limited Edition). And a new product has been added to the suite, HotDocs User, which is a desktop, template-deployment program designed specifically for enterprises not yet ready to make the jump to the server environment. Just as with HotDocs Developer, full PDF functionality will be built into HotDocs User.

“Historically, HotDocs Standard was used not only as a template development tool but also as a template deployment tool,” commented Leonard DuCharme, the company’s Marketing VP. “This created a problem for enterprises that didn’t want end users of templates to have automation capability on their desktops. The new HotDocs User solves this problem. Because HotDocs Standard will now be marketed solely as a scaled-back version of HotDocs Developer, it rightly has been renamed HotDocs Developer LE.”

“The other major change in the company’s product lineup, eliminating PDF Advantage as a standalone product, was a matter of streamlining,” commented Michael Sites, the company’s head of operations in the USA. “We have fewer products to manage, which simplifies both licensing and packaging. Likewise, folding PDF functionality into HotDocs Developer and HotDocs User means a reduction in code, which simplifies the maintenance and release process.”

The HotDocs 10 suite is expected to be released in June of 2010 and will include significant upgrades to all products in the suite.
